Hokusei Gakuen University C Block was constructed on the campus in Sapporo City for the purpose of improving the educational environment and enhancing the setting for cultural exchange on the 50th anniversary of the university’s establishment. The campus of this university is arranged around a beautiful courtyard full of greenery. The new C Block sought to emphasize the relationship with this courtyard and the layout was planned around it. Also, as this building is located in front of the main gate of the university, it was intended to create an eye-catching new facade.
With regard to building function, an auditorium with a capacity of 500 people is located on the 1st and 2nd floors to creating an open hall that is easy for off-campus users to utilize. The foyer is an area for relaxation that is spatially continuous with the courtyard, and the statue “Chi’jin” by Kan Yasuda is set up along the axis from the main gate. Lecture rooms and other facilities have been added to the upper floors, and amenities such as lounges have been enhanced through use of an open structure. The exterior was mainly composed of two materials. Blue tiles such as those used in the chapel (completed in 1964) were used on the first and second floors, which include the auditorium, as a means of creating continuity with the history of the university. Metal panels were used on the upper floors to differentiate them from the white tiles that are the keynote of the other facilities, and it is expected to become a new landmark at the university.
The connection between A Block, which is adjacent to C Block, was renovated to form a curtain wall, creating a lounge with a view of distant downtown Sapporo. The office facilities in the Central Block have been relocated to the new C Block with a complete internal renovation. The first floor has a cafe that provides a new location for students to gather, and the second floor has a variety of learning spaces that encourage students to take greater initiative in their studies.
This project sought to create a new landscape through the addition of modern elements to the university landscape and its 50-year history. It is expected provide a place where students can feel the weight of history of the university on a daily basis.
