体育館を内包する小学校
新しい今金小学校は体育館を校舎の中心に配し、その三辺を教室群が囲み、残りの一辺をグラウンドと山々に向かって開放した特長的な学校となっている。これは、われわれが四半世紀にわたり北海道にふさわしい学校として提案してきた「体育館内包型」の平面を基本としたものであるが、同時に今金町の場所性から導かれた諸条件に応答したものでもある。
一体感とにぎわいのある学校
体育館を一般教室などの校舎機能により取り囲む「体育館内包型」の学校は、通常の学校に比べて強い一体感が感じられる求心的な空間となる。また、見る＝見られるという関係を幾重にもつくることより、にぎわいを誘起する特性も備えている。全校で約250 人の児童が学ぶ小規模校では、こうした親密な空間のもつ利点が特に明確となる。
暖かい体育館をつくる温熱環境
体育館を内包する小学校は、温熱環境的には「間欠暖房」となる体育館を「常時暖房」する教室群が囲む構成となる。これにより体育館の外周部に高性能な断熱空間をつくり外気の冷負荷から内部の体育館を守る構成とした。北海道の小学校では、体育館は冬季の貴重な遊び場になる。

A gymnasium-centered elementary school
The school buildings at the new Imakane Elementary School are laid out in a distinctive manner around the gymnasium, with wings of classrooms on two sides and the third side open, facing the school playground and distant mountains.  This plan was based on a “gymnasium-centered pattern” that we have been recommending as appropriate for schools in Hokkaido for over a quarter of a century; however, it also corresponds to the particular conditions associated with the location in Imakane Town.
A school with a sense of unity and activity
The gymnasium in schools built on the “gymnasium-centered pattern,” in which the gymnasium is surrounded by the other school facilities such as classrooms, becomes a centripetal space, providing a greater sense of unity than in regular schools. In addition, by multiplying the relationship between seeing and being seen, it has the potential to evoke activity. The advantage of creating this enclosed space is particularly clear in such a small-scale school with a total enrollment of only 250 children.
A warm environment creates a warm gymnasium
A gymnasium-centered elementary school consists of an “intermittently heated” gymnasium surrounded by “constantly heated” wings of classrooms. In this way, a high-performance insulated space is created in the outer portion of the gymnasium, and the inner portion of the gymnasium is protected for the cold load from the outside air. The gymnasium thus becomes an important recreation space during winter for elementary schools in Hokkaido.
